East of Eden Characters: Who's Who and the Trask and Hamilton Family Trees

By the Showdated editorial team · Updated

East of Eden follows two families in California's Salinas Valley: the Trasks and the Hamiltons. The Trasks are Cyrus, his sons Adam and Charles (half-brothers), Adam's wife Cathy Ames, and their twin sons Cal and Aron. The Hamiltons are Samuel, his wife Liza and their nine children; Steinbeck's own mother, Olive, is one of them, and the narrator is Samuel's grandson. Lee, Adam's Chinese-American cook, holds the family together, and Abra Bacon is Aron's girlfriend. The main section below is spoiler-free; plot reveals are kept in a separate box. In Netflix's 2026 series, Florence Pugh plays Cathy and Christopher Abbott plays Adam.

Trask family tree

  • Cyrus Trask married twice:
    • with his first wife (unnamed in the book): son Adam Trask
    • with Alice Trask: son Charles Trask
  • Adam Trask married Cathy Ames; their twin sons are Caleb "Cal" Trask and Aaron "Aron" Trask.

So Adam and Charles are half-brothers, and Cal and Aron are fraternal twins.

Hamilton family tree

  • Samuel Hamilton married Liza Hamilton. Their nine children: George, Will, Tom, Joe, Lizzie, Una, Dessie, Olive and Mollie.
  • Olive Hamilton is the mother of John Steinbeck, who narrates parts of the book and appears briefly as a boy, and his sister Mary.

The Hamiltons are Steinbeck's real family: Samuel Hamilton was his grandfather. The Trasks are fictional.

Cain and Abel: why the names matter

The book retells the story of Cain and Abel from Genesis 4, and the title comes from verse 16 ("…and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden"). In each Trask generation there's a pair of brothers and a father who prefers one of them: Charles and Adam, then Cal and Aron. Readers often point out that the Cain-like characters have names starting with C (Charles, Cal, Cathy) and the Abel-like ones with A (Adam, Aron, Abra). Lee's discussion of the Hebrew word timshel ("thou mayest") is the book's answer to the story: people can choose to do good.

Spoilers: what happens to the main characters

Spoiler warning. This box reveals mid-book twists from the novel, which the Netflix series follows. Skip it if you haven't read or watched yet. It doesn't give away the ending.

  • Cathy leaves Adam soon after the twins are born and becomes "Kate", who runs the brothel that used to be Faye's.
  • Adam sinks into depression; Lee and Samuel pull him out of it and help him name the twins.
  • Cal and Aron grow up believing their mother is dead. Cal finds out the truth first.
